Coordinator Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at World Health Organization
The document below is a detailed analysis of the future steps I hope to accomplish in the next twenty years in my career. It includes a self and organizational analysis as well the steps I hope to achieve in the future to achieve my projected career goals. The job is of coordinator at the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at World Health Organization (WHO) (World Health Organization, 2017). WHO is a global organization whose primary mandate is to build a healthier future for people all around the world b combating both infectious and non-communicable diseases that deprive people of a long healthy life.
The specific job tasks that appeal to me from the proposed job include being on the forefront to curbing mental disorders, promotion of mental health and wellbeing while at the same eradicating the stigma associated with the same. For a very long time, mental health has not held the precedence it ought to especially in countries away from the West seeing as it is referred to as a less severe illness. In countries like Africa and other developing areas, mental illness is denied as its effects are mainly not visible and are only quantified only by dire results like suicide and mental breakdowns. Moreover, the job is projected to offer solutions, create awareness and work towards eradicating and managing mental illness as well as formulating policies that will prevent and treat substance abuse.
In the recent years, my passion and attention have been steered towards the increased number of people suffering from various forms of mental illness characterized by increased suicides, depression and psychological breakdown cases. The society has slowly victimized mental illness patients and as such my interests and passion for helping individuals and the families seek help for mental illness has prompted my pursuit for a career in this field. I need to volunteer in different institutions that treat mental illnesses and substance abuse in different parts of the world to get a clear perspective of the various forms that the diseases take and amerce experience and knowledge to promote mental health. I have taken up psychology classes in college as well as volunteer for the support groups that help people with mental diseases to increase my competence and sensitivity to patients as well as families and friends of mentally ill individuals. Some of the obstacles I anticipate to meet is the inability of people to open up and accept help especially in different parts of the world due to the stigma associated with mental diseases and disorders. The obstacles can be overcome by creating awareness, empathy, and education on the different conditions and importance of mental health in the society.
WHO is a global organization that is under the United Nations and is operational in over 150 countries across the globe. WHO works with governments and other partners to ensure that the highest attainable level of health for all people has been reached (World Health Organization, 2017). The organization is focused on combating both infectious diseases and noncommunicable disease like mental illnesses. WHO has employed over 7000 people that work in the various departments, programs, and projects located all over the world with the headquarters in Geneva.
The coordinator of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse is a licensed mental health clinician and is expected to hold a master’s degree or higher in any of the relevant fields. Health administration skills are very suitable as the individual is expected to manage a large team. Since I have not attained any of the mentioned skills, I hope to enroll for my masters soon after completing my undergraduate course and specify in the counseling, social work or psychology. Mental health practitioners ought to be licensed by the governing bodies to be able to practice. I will need to take up jobs in mental institutions, schools, youth outreach centers and other institutions that deal with mental health to gain the necessary experience. Researches on the same in developing countries will give me a competitive edge as it will offer a global outlook on mental health. The WHO offers between five-figure and six-figure remuneration top executive jobs.
My next steps include working on my master’s degree and gaining the job experience required to ensuring that I satisfy the requirements for this and trajectory opportunities. I need to work on my leadership skills and foreign languages to increase my versatility for the position. Finally, I need to attend workshops and career drives to ensure that I am well versed in the job requirement and development.
