Dancers Denver

The “dancers” located in Speer Boulevard, Denver is considered as one of the unique pieces of art in public spaces in the United States. Measuring six stories or 60ft in height, the white dancing aliens were developed with an aim of welcoming visors into the Denver Center of the Performing Arts. These constructs have elicited numerous reactions in the form of criticism, complaints, and even adoration from the public. They were developed in a state of dancing with music from the surrounding areas near the sculpture.

The pieces were installed permanently in the complex on June 12 2003 weighing at 25ton and made from fiberglass and steel. There are five speakers, which are mounted at the base of the sculpture. They are constantly playing the song “Let’s Dance”. The theme song for this artwork was composed, recorded, and performed by Samuel Conlogue and Jonathan Borofsky at the Infusion Studios located in Portland, Maine. The project was developed after commissioning by the residents of the city of Denver and its county. This was done together with the involvement of the Mayoral Commission on art, Culture and Film as well as the Denver Art, Culture and Film Foundation.

Critics have noted that the project was extravagant and the $1.58 million used for its construction could have been used to enhance the condition and services of the Denver Art, Culture and Film Foundation complex for use by the entire Denver city and county community. In addition, this artwork has been criticized for its expensive nature and its creation despite widespread criticism amongst the members of the town committee who were tasked with identifying the best art pieces for the city. Furthermore, the sculptures are in a state of dancing to mimic a welcome dance for visitors into the art complex and more into the city and county of Denver.

The Dancers are a local controversy given the cost of development, which the community has touted as “extravagant”. Borofsky noted that the aim of developing this piece of artwork was influenced by the theme “Everything is connected and All is one”. Te art sector in Denver is booming with the presence of other provoking and interesting pieces featured in a variety of public venues around the county. In addition, they were an illustration of the love of theatre, dance, and music all of which fall under art.

This artwork has been criticized for its expensive nature and its creation despite widespread criticism amongst the members of the town committee who were tasked with identifying the best art pieces for the city. Furthermore, the sculptures are in a state of dancing to mimic a welcome dance for visitors into the art complex and more into the city and county of Denver. It is considered a shame by many who term it is a waste of public funds given that it lacks allure, class, and innovation.

Furthermore, residents note that these 60ft giant naked aliens fail to capture the true values and culture of Denver city and county at large. This is primarily because other forms of art such as the Big Blue Bear also known as I See What You Mean, which has been hailed as an incredible work of art. This is based on the fact that it captures the culture and lifestyle of Denver county and city given the numerous encounters with wild bears and other animals. In addition, the Dancers fail to capture the imagination of the people o Denver and resort to common occurrences, which have been termed as uninteresting. The dancers may not appeal to a majority of people, but are favored by some individuals who are adherent fans of the artist Borofsky who is known worldwide for developing captivating artwork despite falling short in marking the Dancers.
