GEO 101: Global Forces, Local Diversity Final Essay Question

Geographers use six basic concepts to describe a place or landscape. The first is the location which shows the position of a event or feature in space using specific coordinates. The second is the region which is distinguished by specific features such as political features, cultural features, and religious practice. The third is place which looks at the physical and cultural attributes of a given feature. The fourth concept looks at the density, dispersion, and pattern which provide extensive overview on the spatial pattern of a geographic place. The fifth (spatial interaction) is spatial interaction which monitors how transformations in a particular place influence changes in another place or location. The sixth concept geographers use for describing a place is the size and scale of a particular area to refer to the actual representations as depicted in the maps. The six concepts help to acquire more information about San Diego which is a fast developing city in California.

Location

San Diego is nearly 190 km (120 miles) south of LA (Los Angeles) and shares the border with Mexico. The place’s elevation is 1,590 meters above the sea level making the altitude relatively higher than many American cities (Engstrand 11).

Region

San Diego is a big city in California, U.S. The city is in San Diego County on the coastal part of the Pacific Ocean in the Southern Part of California.

Place

San Diego County comprises a group of rural and urban communities from desert regions to coastal beachfronts. The culture is largely influenced by the Mexican and American cultures which influence practices. The place has neighborhoods which define its nature. Hillcrest, City Heights, Mission Valley, and College Area are some of the communities and neighborhoods which shape the practices in the city (Engstrand 17). The attractive museums and the various sports clubs and groups also add towards the entire setup of San Diego.

Density, Dispersion, Pattern

The city has a population of 1,406,627 as at 2016 making it the eighth-largest populated city in the country. The cities have higher populations compared to the rural locations because of the better job opportunities and improved facilities in the modern areas. The population density in the area is 3,771.7 residents per square mile. Whites dominate the place (58%) followed by African Americans (6.7%), and then Native Americans (0.6%). Other minority groups also exist including the Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Vietnamese, Koreans, and Laotians (Engstrand 20).

Spatial Interaction

The standing hills and mountains in the region have a significant effect on weather in the surrounding places. The natural features facilitate rains in other places which fall in the lee side of the mountainous and hilly places.

Size and Scale

The place covers 372.38 square miles with the land covering 325.19 square miles and the water consuming 47.20 square miles (Engstrand 25).

I consider San Diego and the concepts used to describe the geography to be important to me due to some reasons. First, I consider the county to be of importance to me because it was the first place I visited for holidays after finishing high school. I highly valued the transition and travelled to San Diego to enjoy with my entire family. I was particularly interested with our visit to the Fault Line Park in East Village where we had a good time at the shopping centers and restaurants. I also consider the six concepts of describing a region’s geography to be important because of the way they allow the researcher to gain more information on a particular area. The investigator, for example, may choose to acquire as many information as possible on the location, or the region, or even the place. The place is broadly significant because of its deepwater harbors which attract massive cargo and passenger ships. The potentiality show the place might become a major port in the near future. Other than the port which connects global processes to the region, the place has sandy beaches which attract millions of tourists into the place annually. The area also attracts international investors who add to the region’s economy.

The six concepts play a vital role in helping me understand the place much better, and it is possible to point out how the place exemplify the perspectives. The concepts provide a wider view of San Diego because it allows room for the analysis of various issues at the same time. The analyst in this case gains specific insight which includes the location, region, spatial pattern, spatial interaction, and human and environmental interactions, and culture. San Diego, on the other hand, perfectly displays the features of the six concepts in the way it falls within a given region (California) and in the way it has a specific size and scale. The place also shows features of the concepts in the way it stands in a given location with specific attributions such as density and dispersion. I contribute towards the broader trends in San Diego by visiting the various attractive sites and purchasing at the shopping centers around thereby contributing towards the revenue generation.
