Speech from Movie

The film, Remember the Titans, is a sports motion picture based on the life of Herman Boone, an African American football coach at T. C. Williams High School. Much of the critical acclaim that precedes the respective movie is due to its focus on institutionalized racism, discrimination and the implications it posed on American education, specifically public schools located in most of the Southern States, especially Virginia. Played by Denzel Washington, Coach Boone was among the few persons of African descent who managed to face the bigotry system and simultaneously, created a strong team that fostered profound interracial relationships regardless of race or color. Even though different speeches are uttered within the film, none of them compares to the “Gettysburg Speech” due to its sturdy references to the Battle of Gettysburg and its relation to the disunity that was among the white and African American players at the time.

Observation

The motion picture, Remember the Titans, mostly focused on American football and the issue of race in 1970s America. At this time, the overall setting was characterized by ongoing civil rights movement that called for the treatment of African Americans equally nationwide. Additionally, states located within the South were plagued by fascist dogma originating mainly from a waning Ku Klux Klan, which had terrorized the region since the implementation of the Jim Crow Laws after the occurrence of the American Civil War. As such, the setting provided a platform for illustrating the extent to which racial prejudice and bigotry affected American society in as far as education was concerned. In order to provide a clear view of this, the film comprised a portrayal of Herman Boone, one of the few African American coaches credited with the nurturing of a racially mixed yet talented group of high school football players.

Regarding the setting of the speech, the context used for the address was mainly identified by ongoing racial tensions between white persons and African Americans within the surrounding areas of Virginia. As such, such tensions were also illustrated among the students at a time when the respective state was divided into a segregated community with the existent populations accessing different services by manner of color or racial disposition. Hence, the “Gettysburg Speech” proved to be rather instrumental in appealing to the audience at the time, which mainly comprised the white and African American players of the high school football team. With the speech, Coach Boone was capable of providing a comparison of the negative situation currently occurring among the players and the reasons that led to the start of the Battle of Gettysburg in the first place (Remember the Titans).

Since the desired outcome involved enabling the two sides to work together, the communications channel that was used comprised the best way for sending the messages to the respective audience. As asserted, different speeches were used throughout the motion picture. Even though they posed a considerable effect, the “Gettysburg Speech” was able to create a team that ceased from focusing on racial leanings. With the key message being the need to work together for a common goal, the respective speech acted positively as a legit communication channel by appealing to the audience and allowing each of them to focus on the gravity of the warnings uttered by Herman Boone if the team refused to work together. In essence, the use of this address provided the coach with the best possible alternative to resolve the race-based conflict between the two sides.

Analysis

Concerning the speech, the speaker performed considerably in achieving his desired outcome. From the onset of the film, Coach Boone is met with criticism arising from his background as an African American man rather than coach. In addition to this, racial tensions are present among the players he is supposed to coach and lead to victory. As such, it becomes a difficult task to handle since he is required to ensure that the team is united in order for them to gain a chance in competing and winning against the other teams (Remember the Titans). With the “Gettysburg Speech”, the speaker did well in delivering the key message, which was mainly unity irrespective of color or background. However, one of the aspects that the speaker would have improved on involves the length of the speech. Even though the desired outcome, the speech was short and may have failed if it were introduced in the beginning rather than after the audience had learnt to relate amongst themselves. Therefore, if I were to do it differently, I would make it longer. Personally, the speech inspired me to overlook the physical characteristics of an individual always and to accept that every person is different.

Conclusion

Coach Herman Boone’s “Gettysburg Speech” from the film, Remember the Titans, is a fine example of an address that qualifies as a strong communication channel. With its use of comparisons, particularly its focus on the Battle of Gettysburg, the speaker was capable of achieving the desired outcome, which comprised the need to unify and to strive towards a common goal regardless of color or background. Despite its limited length, the “Gettysburg Speech” provides a fair illustration of the elements that a speech should embody if it seeks to appeal to its audience and achieve the expected results.
